About
I have previously worked in Youth and Community Development for 11 years. After joining the University of Chester as graduate student, I was appointed Programme Leader and Lecturer in Muslim Youth Work from 2007-2010. I currently teach Islamic and Religious Studies at Liverpool Hope University,UK.
My research interests encompass youth studies, contemporary Islamic Studies, Islam in Britain and currently focuses on British Muslim youth and religious activism in the UK. My PhD examines religious revivalism among British Muslim youth over the last 20 years, analysing the development and impact of paradigmatic tendencies such as Islamism, Salafism and neo-Sufism in shaping Muslim religious discourses in Britain today.
I write and speak on issues related to Muslim communities in Britain. My non-academic work has been published in The Guardian, Q-News and The Muslim News.
I have recently co-edited a volume on Islam and Youth Work with Dr Brian Belton for Sense Publishers.
